Submission Guidelines

The University of Hawaiʻi Law Review gives preference to Articles under 25,000 words (including footnotes). Except in special circumstances, we do not publish Articles exceeding 30,000 words (including footnotes). Articles must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx). Articles should use footnotes, rather than endnotes.

The University of Hawaiʻi Law Review shares the belief, recently expressed by many other law journals, that the vast majority of law review Articles can effectively convey their message in under seventy law review pages. Student-written Comments should generally be between 10,000 and 15,000 words (including footnotes). Casenotes should generally be between 7,500 and 10,000 words (including footnotes).

Citation Format

Manuscripts must conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (Columbia L. Rev. Ass’n et al. eds., 22d ed. 2025), with two exceptions:

(1) Parallel citations are required for cases decided by Hawaiʻi state courts; and

(2) Words of Hawaiian origin should incorporate diacritical marks (ʻokina and kahakō). See generally Mary Kawena Pukui & Samuel H. Elbert, Hawaiian Dictionary (1986) (specifying proper spelling of Hawaiian words); Mary Kawena Pukui, Samuel H. Elbert & Esther T. Moʻokini, Place Names of Hawaiʻi (1974) (specifying proper spelling of Hawaiian place names).

Generative AI Use

Submissions must disclose any use of generative AI in the drafting or editing process. Authors may submit the disclosure as a supporting document. Discovery of undisclosed generative AI use may disqualify a submission from consideration by the University of Hawaiʻi Law Review.
